Is there any explanation or vague reference in Star Trek canon for how dermal regenerators work? Memory Alpha has failed me.

Okay. So the Enterprise simulator thing on the Blue-Ray is KICK-ASS, and it definitely answered some questions for me (like what those two giant red light things are at the back of the disk). But there were some things it didn't explain.
